Our tiny structures help homeless people regain dignity, independence and employability.

Cascadia Clusters is working to transition homeless Portlanders into employment and mainstream housing. Here’s how:

Quality, Cost-effective Transitional Workforce Housing Structures

At the core of Cascadia Clusters’ mission is our dedication to use of up-cycled affordable materials, professionally-taught houseless graduates of our Construction Trainee Program, and state-of-the-art building practices to provide secure, insulated, well-built and environmentally-conscious tiny structures. These structures follow applicable building codes and utilize cutting-edge tiny home design techniques. Many off-grid transitional housing projects involving tiny homes lack proper quality control, insulation, and ease-of-maintenance features, but Cascadia Clusters works closely with community partners and field experts to provide high quality products at a below-market-rate.

The Village: Innovative, Affordable & community-oriented transitional housing

The “village” is a small group of tiny homes and several accessory buildings (including a bathhouse with running water & showers, a shared kitchen building, a “common room” and community storage structures. These villages are inhabited by people actively working to transition out of homelessness, seeking employment or community support through programs like Social Security and the VA. The communities are typically operated by places of worship (churches, synagogues, etc.) or other nonprofit organizations. They are typically governed by the residents themselves, involve rotating “chores” for residents that are a requirement for residency, and offer an intimate setting for the nurturing of social and vocational skills.

Recycled Materials

We partner with Reclaim NW, a family-owned deconstruction and upcycling company and the ReBuilding Center, a local reused construction materials nonprofit, to use recycled materials in nearly every stage of our construction.

Solar-powered light, Electricity & Showers

Each tiny home we construct or refurbish is fitted with an efficient, affordable solar-electric system called a JuiceBox. This system, provided by our partners at Shine, brings low-maintenance and clean light and electricity to each structure. JuiceBoxes can be found at Right to Dream Too, Agape Village, Hazelnut Grove, Dignity Village, and R2D2’s City of Portland-sponsored C3PO villages.
